Every year, during Diwali celebrations, we hear of accidents due to fire crackers.Diwali crackers are made of toxic substances that have dire consequences to the environment, people and animals. Last year in UP, a child was killed due to a blast that occurred in a home where fire crackers were made illegally.Simultaneously,in a place called Wardha,in the Vidharba region, a calf swallowed an active bomb which exploded in its mouth. The resulting damage is there for you to see. It fought for its life and gave up a week later. Several other stories can be narrated about the dangers of fire crackers. Not to talk of the fact that most of the factories where fire crackers are made, employ little children for labour and expose them to health hazards.

Somehow, we prefer ignorance despite our enlightment.Festivals have become an excuse for violence and irresponsible behaviour.Time and again, parents have given in to the whims of their children and encouraged them by buying loads of fire crackers. Instead parents should educate their children about the dangers of firecrackers. Take your child on an excursion to a factory that manufactures fire crackers and show him/her what discomforts other children of their age go through. Maybe you could celebrate Diwali in a quiet manner this year by simply lighting a diya and distributing home made sweets. You don’t have to light up the sky to celebrate Diwali. All it does is create a mess both in the environment and in the lives of stray animals who suffer the most because of the loud noise and unattended bombs. We always think that bad news is the prerogative of others. Today it is someone else’s child. Tomorrow it could be yours! Before that happens, say NO to crackers!
