A story-Ravi Ramchander

It was a rainy evening and I was coming home from work. As I was entering our portico, I heard a very soft meow, barely audible, weak but a sound that said, “I need help”. I looked around to see from where the sound was coming, and lo and behold, there were Ninku, Kitchu and Wispy, three bundles of fur, left behind by their mother who had obviously gone hunting for food for her siblings.

In two minds, I left them alone. As the evening wore on, my mind was wavering towards bringing them home. It didn’t take long before my wife and I decided to bring them up for a saucer of warm milk thinking that we would leave them back before their mother returned from her hunt. We brought them up all right and they have been with us ever since.Ninku, Kitchu and Wispy have been our joy. They welcome us home eagerly and give us a lot of love and happiness. “Where did you go today?” asks Wispy. Ninku gives a big smile and says” I caught a dragon fly today.” Kitchu is the interactive one. He gives one of the most lovable bear hugs you could ask for and then gives you a pat on the backside when you pass him by. Could anyone ask for a better homecoming everyday?

Society doesn’t understand that they too have a heart and soul. Ninku, Kitchu, Wispy and Momita, their Mother, too wish to communicate and share their love and experiences in their own lovable way. Momita’s dedication and love for her children is as much heart rending as any single mother’s, in the human race.

Unfortunately, they will be leaving us shortly for a shelter called “KARUNASHRAM” of which my wife and I are active members. Why are they leaving when they give us so much love and happiness? Our house is too small and they have grown considerably since we brought them home. They now need space to roam, to hunt and get back to their natural habitat and way of life. It is unfair to keep them cooped up for our own selfish reasons. Strange are the ways of life. Just when you think you’ve found love, it wants freedom.
